Year 6 Children’s Review (10-11 Year Olds):
Dear Brian,
Thank you for your author letter and for sharing such a special book with us. We have thoroughly enjoyed Siggy’s journey in helping Mrs Chana and we would like to share some of our thoughts with you…
Relevant and current- English county, Manchester United shirt and village.
Ambitious verbs moving story forward- transfixed, scampered, trotted, scooted and swaggered.
Repetition of words/phrases- bark, bark, bark and scampered.
Key words/phrases in larger font and different colour- if they believe in magic and it is you.
Multicultural-A range of characters such as Mrs Chana.
Key moral- the theme of keeping a promise is delivered in a humorous and fun way.
Rating- 5/5
“Exciting, adventurous and simply fun!”
“Magical, special and relatable…”
“Siggy is truly remarkable in reminding us the importance of keeping promises.”
Its a great book, a lovely story and unique illustrations, perfect for year 1-4…
They loved the story! The pictures really inspired Year 1. Reception loved the cuddly toy and older children really wanted to find out more about the characters and whether they were real.
I enjoyed seeing the children so pleased to meet a ‘real author’ and I was surprised by the level of questions the older children asked. They responded to meeting you in such lovely ways. You clearly inspired many of them.
I shared this wonderful book with my class of 8 year olds today and they loved it! In fact they clapped at the end! This is such a beautiful story with a poignant message of you can do anything if you put your mind to it no matter how small you are.
We have our first ‘Reading For Pleasure Champion’ of the month They have chosen the fantastic Siggy Loves Sausages by Brian Frederick
The relatable narrative and highly-schematic illustrations make this a pleasure for children to read and well placed to support the Early Years Framework and KS1 curriculum. It is a real treat which can be enjoyed again and again.
This delightful, palindromic picture book is accompanied by highly-schematic pictures
which sustain Siggy’s sense of purpose right to the end.
It makes a complementary pairing with Rosie’s Walk (Pat Hutchins), We’re Going on a Bear
Hunt (Michael Rosen) or The Detective Dog (Julia Donaldson).
Winner of Gold Literary Titan Book Award in December 2021.
Brian’s Media Bio
Brian is a children’s book author. He aims to bring more joy into the world, for children (and for the adults who love them) so that they can live happier lives filled with more kindness.
Brian is a proponent of finding the goodness in life. He shares the value of that philosophy through children’s stories. In his books he hopes to entertain children and show them a world of kindness, joy and wonder.
Monday through Friday finds Brian as the lawyer at the helm of a commercial mediation services company. His work encourages solving disputes peacefully. This ideal carries over to the philosophy he shares in his children’s books. He is the founder and lead mediator at GetMediation, one of the UK’s leading commercial mediation companies, helping people to avoid the stress and expense of litigation and to simply get on with their lives free of conflict.
Brian’s new book Siggy Loves Sausages is a great example of this philosophy. In the book, Siggy the dachshund is an innocent, with the sweetest nature, just like a child. he wants to help people and finds that doing so brings him happiness.Brian began life in the legal world in litigation before realising he prefered to end conflicts rather than participate in fighting them.
Along the way, he also rediscovered his passion for writing and has a series of children’s book s coming out that he hopes will make the world a little better for his readers.Brian’s business has achieved several awards including Best Multi-Speciality Mediation Firm in England’s Prestige Business Awards. He writes for over 40,000 readers about his beloved Manchester United at The Utd Journal and his first children’s book is already garnering rave advance reviews. In fact, it looks like Siggy Loves Sausages will become an Amazon Kids Bestseller in the very near future.
Brian has built a strong Author Platform from nothing in the last two months and engages with the writing community on both Twitter and Instagram every day. Brian had just under 1,500 Twitter followers, and over 1,200 followers on Instagram (from a standing start just a couple of months ago) at the time of writing, and his following grows daily.Brian has been featured as a Top Ten Exciting New Author in De MODE Magazine, and given a double spread feature and interview for their 600,000 readers.
Asked about his philosophy of life as a writer, Brian said:
“I don’t know if stories for children can change the world, but I hope they can make it a little better – certainly for my readers.
I hope I can bring a little more joy into the world, and a little more truth and kindness.
I do care that these and other important things are often in short supply when they needn’t be. Maybe my readers and I can change that together…”

2. You Only Dine Twice… Brian has enjoyed both breakfast and dinner (twice) with both James Bond and Vanessa Redgrave…
De mode interview snippet:
Children’s book author Brian Frederick enjoyed creating his own worlds and being an insatiable reader from an early age. He always wanted to be a writer, having won praise and awards for his early stories, and was particularly inspired by the Narnia stories. When he writes, he finds himself entering a bubble of creativity, allowing his mind to wander into an imaginary realm.
Brian grew up in Northern Ireland, during “the Troubles” and went to a posh school where CS Lewis was once a pupil and Samuel Beckett briefly taught. Brian made the sports pages as a champion swimmer, travelling widely and representing Ireland as well as being a serial holder of records. He says he may have been more dedicated to training than to his studies at times.
After school, he studied for a Law degree at Southampton University, before taking a Master’s in Law at Queen’s University, while he enjoyed all that student life had to offer. A legal career beckoned, of course, and he pursued it, but it turned out that Brian liked being a writer more than being a lawyer.
“I much prefer writing stories to writing writs,” he quips.
Whether the story is about embracing enthusiasm and good cheer, or finding gratitude in the little things, Brian’s characters are blessed with good fortune. In Brian’s picture book, Siggy Loves Sausages, the magical little dog Siggy is rewarded for his positivity—with a sausage, of course!
His philosophy is that a great book is one that shares the beauty in everyday life. His relatability to children is evident. Real events and local children delivering little bouquets of flowers to their neighbours inspired The Phabulous Phlower Phaeries, his forthcoming book for older children. Brian’s hope is that his stories provide happiness and enjoyment to his young readers.
When he isn’t writing imaginative life lessons for children—whilst listening to loud indie rock music on headphones—Brian enjoys following Manchester United Football Club and taking country walks with his wife, Harvinder (whose family hail from the Punjab).
Together they live in a small nature reserve, where their house is alive with birdsong and woodland critters run around the trees like a fairytale forest. Outside a few of the locals take a daily stroll with their dogs. One of the dogs is Günther the dachshund who inspired Siggy. It’s a perfect haven for storytelling. Especially stories about sausage dogs!
